Mini Pizza for Kids: Fun and Simple Cooking Activity

Jump to Recipe

Looking for a fun and easy way to get your kids involved in the kitchen? Making mini pizzas is the perfect activity! Not only is it a great way to spend quality time together, but it also gives your little ones the chance to get creative, learn new skills, and most importantly, have fun with their food.

In my house, mini pizza nights are a guaranteed hit. My kids love pretending they’re professional pizza chefs, complete with chef hats and all! Watching them carefully arrange their toppings is both hilarious and heartwarming—my youngest once made a “pepperoni pyramid.”

Whether you’re making the dough from scratch or using store-bought, these mini pizzas are a guaranteed hit. Plus, your kids get to choose their own toppings, which makes the experience even more exciting for them. Letting them be the boss of their own pizza? Instant win in their eyes.

Benefits of Cooking with Kids

rolling pizza dough

Cooking with kids is about making memories and teaching important life skills along the way. Here’s why this mini pizza activity is perfect for young chefs:

Hands-On Learning

From rolling out the dough to sprinkling toppings, every step is a chance for your kids to practice their fine motor skills and learn basic kitchen tasks.
My oldest now considers himself the “dough master” after mastering the rolling pin. She even gives me tips now—“Mum, more flour next time!”

Family Bonding

Making mini pizzas together is a wonderful way to connect and share some laughs. There’s something special about working together to create something delicious.
Last time we made these, my kids insisted on making a “family pizza”—one giant pie where each of us decorated a slice. Let’s just say my side was significantly heavier on the veggies than theirs!

Building Confidence

When kids make their own pizza, they feel proud of their work—and there’s nothing like seeing their faces light up when they take their first bite of something they created!
The way my daughter beamed after her first bite of her “veggie masterpiece” was priceless. She even told me, “Mum, I think I could open a restaurant!”

Remember, things might get a little messy, and that’s okay! The most important part is that you’re having fun together. In fact, the messier it gets, the more memories you’re probably making.

Gather Your Ingredients

pizza dough ingredients

Making mini pizzas starts with the basics, and you can either prepare everything from scratch or take a few shortcuts—it’s up to you!

For the Dough

  • Homemade Pizza Dough: Mix active dry yeast, sugar, warm water, all-purpose flour, salt, and olive oil, then knead and let rise for an hour.
Making the dough from scratch? Be prepared for your kids to sneak bites of it—it’s all part of the process!
  • Store-Bought Dough: Save time by using pre-made dough. Divide it into small portions for each pizza.

For the Toppings

  • Pizza Dough (homemade or store-bought)
  • Pizza Sauce (store-bought or try our easy homemade pizza sauce recipe)
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Your Favourite Toppings: Pepperoni, bell peppers, olives, mushrooms, ham, pineapple, spinach, or anything else your kids love!
My kids once tried chocolate and marshmallows as a topping—spoiler alert: soooo good!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Mini Pizza for Kids

Step 1: Make the Dough (Optional)

If you’d like to make the pizza dough from scratch, here’s our simple recipe. Don’t worry if you’re short on time—store-bought dough works just as well!

Homemade dough days are our favourite because the kids love watching the dough rise—it’s like magic to them.

Step 2: Roll Out the Dough

This is where the fun really starts! Help your kids roll out their dough into small, personal-sized circles (or get creative with shapes—who says pizza has to be round?).
Last time, we attempted star-shaped pizzas. Were they perfect? Absolutely not. Did we laugh the whole time? Definitely!

Step 3: Spread the Sauce

Give each kid a spoon and let them spread pizza sauce over their dough. Kids love this part—it’s like painting, but with food!
My youngest calls this “painting the pizza canvas” and insists on making swirl patterns every time.

Step 4: Add the Cheese and Toppings

Now it’s time to get creative! Let your kids sprinkle cheese and dive into the toppings.

  • Pepperoni Face: Use pepperoni slices for eyes, olives for the nose, and capsicums for the smile.
  • Veggie Rainbow: Arrange colourful capsicums, spinach, and mushrooms to create a rainbow.
  • Hawaiian Style: Ham and pineapple for that sweet-and-savoury combo.

Last week, my daughter made a “pepperoni flower,” and my son made a pizza with a “cheese moat” around the edge. Their imaginations never cease to amaze me.

Step 5: Bake the Mini Pizza

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Place the pizzas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
Watching the cheese bubble in the oven is half the fun—my kids call it “pizza magic.”

Step 6: Cool and Serve

Let the pizzas cool for a few minutes before serving. Admire your kids’ creations and dig in!
We always clap for the “pizza chef” after the first bite. It’s our little way of celebrating their hard work.

Fun Topping Ideas for Kids

Classic Pepperoni and Cheese: Always a favourite, simple and satisfying.

Veggie Lovers: Capsicums, mushrooms, and spinach for a colourful, healthy pizza.

Sweet and Savoury: Ham and pineapple for a tropical twist.

Custom Creations: Let kids arrange toppings into shapes, smiley faces, or patterns.

One time, my son made a “monster pizza” with olive eyes and capsicum tentacles—it was as delicious as it was terrifying.

Final Thoughts

Making mini pizzas with your kids is more than just cooking—it’s about spending quality time, having fun, and creating something together. No matter how the pizzas turn out, the real joy is in the process. And if a little extra flour ends up on the floor, it just means you’re doing it right.

So, roll up your sleeves, preheat that oven, and let the pizza party begin! We’d love to see your mini pizza creations—don’t forget to share photos and tag us on social media.

Ingredients

Pizza Dough: (optional)

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons or 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water around 110°F or 43°C – warm to the touch but not hot
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (plus extra for greasing)

Assemble Mini Pizza:

  • 1 batch Pizza dough can use store bought dough or pita bread
  • 1 cup Pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 2 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Optional toppings:
  • Pepperoni, Ham, Chicken, Bacon,
  • Pineapple, Corn, Mushroom, Capsicum,
  • Olives, Spinach, Broccoli, Basil

Instructions

Prepare the pizza dough:

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast.
  • Stir gently and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy or bubbly. This means the yeast is activated and ready to go!
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients.
  • Stir everything together using a spoon or your hands until a sticky dough forms.
  • Sprinkle a little flour onto a clean surface and turn out the dough onto it.
  • Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, adding small amounts of flour if it gets too sticky. Kneading means pressing the dough with the palms of your hands, folding it, and then pressing again.
  • Form the dough into a ball and place it in a bowl lightly coated with olive oil.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into smaller portions (depending on how many mini pizzas you want to make).

Assemble the mini pizza

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Make sure the oven is at the right temperature before baking the pizzas.
  • If using homemade dough, roll it out into small (or use your hands if kids prefer), personal-sized pizza rounds. If using store-bought dough, portion and roll it out to your desired size.
  • Transfer the dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
  • Using a spoon, spread about 1–2 tablespoons of pizza sauce onto each dough round. Kids can help spread the sauce evenly, leaving a small edge for the crust.
  • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce on each pizza. Add more or less cheese depending on your child’s preference.
  • Let kids choose their favourite toppings from the selection. Here are some fun combinations:
  • Classic Pepperoni: Add pepperoni slices and extra cheese.
  • Hawaiian Delight: Add ham slices and pineapple chunks.
  • Veggie Pizza: Add sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, and spinach.
  • BBQ Chicken: Add cooked chicken, BBQ sauce drizzle, and corn.
  • Create Your Own: Let them get creative with a mix of any toppings they like!
  • Carefully place the baking sheet with the pizzas into the preheated oven.
  • Bake for about 10–12 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  • Once the pizzas are done, remove them from the oven (with an adult's help) and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Slice into smaller pieces if desired, and enjoy your custom-made mini pizzas!
